I turned on the TV over the weekend and up popped the news – not something I watch often but here I was for a few minutes and it got me thinking; what we consume can have a profound impact on our day-to-day living.

Our bodies can undergo various reactions depending on what we are surrounded with. Emotionally, the news or too much time on social media for example can evoke feelings of anxiety, stress, and even sadness, triggering the release of stress hormones like cortisol. Physically, prolonged exposure to distressing news can lead to increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and muscle tension. Our bodies become highly responsive to the information presented, and the constant influx of bad news can disrupt our sleep patterns, impair concentration, and even affect our overall well-being.

The things we intake, both mentally and physically, have a profound impact on our personal growth, beliefs, and character. Our experiences, knowledge, relationships, and habits influence our thoughts, actions, and overall well-being. By being mindful of what we consume, we can actively shape our lives and strive for personal happiness and fulfillment.

If this resonates, here are 3 steps to help you;

  • Self-Awareness: Develop a deep understanding of yourself, your values, and your goals. Reflect on what brings you joy, what aligns with your beliefs, and what contributes positively to your well-being. Be aware of the media you consume, the people you surround yourself with, and the activities you engage in. Regularly assess if they are in line with your values and support your happiness. This self-awareness will serve as a compass for making conscious choices about what you consume.

  • Selective Consumption: Once you have identified what aligns with your values and brings you happiness, be selective in your consumption. Choose media that inspires, educates, and uplifts you. Surround yourself with supportive and positive relationships that encourage personal growth. Seek out experiences that broaden your perspective and contribute to your well-being. Be mindful of the information you intake and critically evaluate its validity and impact on your thoughts and beliefs.

  • Cultivate Positive Habits: Create intentional habits that reinforce positive consumption patterns. Engage in activities that promote personal growth, mental and emotional well-being, and physical health. Incorporate practices such as reading uplifting books, learning new skills, practicing mindfulness or meditation, exercising regularly, and nurturing meaningful relationships. By consistently engaging in these positive habits, you can actively shape your environment, thoughts, and character, leading to a happier and more fulfilling life.

Remember, the key is to be conscious of what you consume, make choices that align with your values and well-being, and cultivate positive habits that support your personal growth and happiness.
